Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors

1 What are Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors?

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) is a condition associated with the presence of tumorous cells in the digestive tracts. It has been found to affect the upper part of the stomach and small intestines.

Some tumors have also been found in the esophagus, large intestine and anus. GISTs has been discovered among middle-aged or older adults. No cases have been found in small children and can be considered as rare.

They are believed to start in the cells of the digestive tract, that send signals which make the digestive tract contract. The contraction of the digestive tracts sends food and liquid through the digestive system
