All colonoscopies, including biopsies of the colon, are done under conscious sedation. That means the patient is aware enough to be able to carry out functions that are essential to keeping them alive. This includes functions like breathing and circulating blood through the body. Moderate sedation decreases the perception of pain and some other sensations. This level of sedation still allows a person to use the five senses, but they aren't quite as sensitive as usual. Usually one of three medications is used intravenously: Propofol, Ketamine, or Dexmedetomidine. While sedated, the patient feels no pain during the procedure.
