Typically gum recession will be treated after it progresses beyond a few millimeters. However the type of recession as well as tissue biotype around the area all play a role in proper treatment. Clinical evaluation is the best way to have this issue addressed.
Treatment for recession is usually done by a periodontist. Treatment is usually a free gingival graft. Many factors come into the decision to do a graft. Unfortunately there is not a set answer for this. Visiting a periodontist or asking your general dentist who can take measurements and assess your whole mouth will be best to answer this question for you.
If the gum recession is not causing any esthetic concerns or if you are not having any difficulty functioning (meaning there is no sensitivity etc) then it is your call. However, if the gum recession is due to an underlying pathology, then you will need immediate treatment. Your answer can best be answered by a thorough exam.
Thank you for your question.
A specialist periodontist needs to diagnose the reason for the recession. For an example: presence of periodontal disease and bone loss, mucogingival problems and lack of attached gingiva, high attachment of the lip, destructive occlusal forces, teeth grinding, gastric reflux etc. The sooner the treatment the better the results. In my office proper nutrition and supplementation, as well as strengthening the immune system and lifestyle changes are offered. in addition to the dental treatments.
