Propranolol is very fast and safe.
*Xanax (alprazolam) or Ativan (lorazepam) are typically prescribed in the moment but Klonopin (clonazepam), and Valium (diazepam) also* work quickly, typically bringing relief within 30 minutes to an hour. Benzodiazepines should be taken with caution. They are highly addictive. SSRIs are also approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of panic disorders as well. These medications include *fluoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil, Pexeva) and sertraline (Zoloft)*.
Clonazepam is very helpful though best used to prevent panic. As a long acting medication it may keep an individual calm for up to 8 hours. It is not a fast acting medication so best used to prevent panic.

For a current episode although Xanax works quickly
it tends to be habit forming.

If also depressed with Panic many patients find Paxil works over time once on it for weeks.
