Dermapathologist Questions Moles

Does mole removal always result in scarring?

I have a huge mole on my cheek and I would really like it removed. I'm discussing my options now, but the only thing that I'm really concerned about is whether or not it would leave a scar. How likely is a scar after my mole removal? Should I really be concerned about this?

Check out "Scalpel Sculpting" for mole removals. With the is technique, which I have been using for nearly four decades, there is no deep cutting and no sutures, which means no chance of stretch scars and no chance of "railroad track" stitch scars. I have personal before and after photos to show how this procedure can even remove perfectly flat moles from the nose.
I feel your concern regarding your mole. Mole removal and scarring depend heavily on technique of removal. If your mole is small enough that it can be removed using a punch technique, you will end up with sutures and a line in place of a raised mole. So, you will need to decide what you will rather have, "Your current mole or a line likely the length of your current mole." The other technique, "Shave removal," I will state you should avoid at all cost. It will leave a flat patch in place of your mole, but has more of a chance of scarring. Also, look at other parts of your body where you have injured your skin. The way they healed can give you an idea how well you will heal if you go through with surgery.
Hope this helps.

Yes, any type of mole removal will leave a scar. Please watch our video that specifically addresses this concern and thank you for the question.

Most of the time, a simple shave of a mole does not produce a scar. But that also depends on the size and depth of the mole.

Hello, there is a chance it could leave a scar. In cases that it should you can use 100% coco butter on the area, or have your physician prescribed you a facial scarring cream to help bring back the melanin in that area if it does leave a scar.
Most likely there will be a scar. Depending on how it’s done and by whom, the scar is highly variable.
