I have a family history of diabetes. Is diabetes genetic or not?

The typical diabetes types (1 and 2) are multi factorial, meaning, there is a combination of genetic and environmental factors and there is no specific gene known to cause them. However, there are more rare types of diabetes that are due to mutation in a single gene and they follow known inheritance as autosomal dominant or recessive.
