Neurologist (Pediatric) Questions

Pediatric neurology- cervical dystonia?

My son is 10 years old and has 10 or more migraines a month. He appears lethargic when these migraines happen. He also has involuntary neck jerking, daily. His neck jerks unless he is asleep. He tends to keep his hand on his neck, I’m assuming because he is embarrassed or it’s his way to alleviate the discomfort that the neck jerking is causing. He was involved in a 65 mph head on collision 3 years ago. I noticed the headaches since the car accident but these have since turned into migraines and neck jerking In just the past year and a half. We have a mri scheduled. Could this be cervical dystonia? Or something else?

Good morning,
I am happy you have the MRI scheduled. After an accident it is important to evaluate for structural problems. It is not uncommon to develop headaches after a concussion or an accident. What you are describing sounds like motor tics. These can be mild or severe. These are treated with therapy such as CBIT or medications. It is always important to see your pediatrician and evaluate for the need to be referred to a neurologist.
