Addiction Psychiatrist Questions Addiction Medicine Specialist

Should I go to the ER?

I’m a 38 year old female whose been addicted to heroin for 18 years and also crack and meth for the last 2. I’m always feeling crappy but I’m feeling VERY sick. I’ve had pneumonia before and I just found out I was directly exposed to Covid. I’m having trouble breathing when I walk a couple steps. My legs hurt so badly I can hardly walk and I have bad pains in my stomach and chest and oddly in my vagina (cervix, womb area) and also sharp pain in my throat that travels to my ears. I’ve also had a big lump in my throat for about a year. About every 30-45 days my throat swells up so bad I look like I have a male weightlifter neck and my tongue will swell up. The lump is always there and makes me look like I have an Adam’s apple.

I recommend that you go to your primary doctor or emergency room within the next 24-48 hours so that you can have a thorough physical examination of your health, including the substance abuse and also other changes you’ve noticed with your health. Be sure to tell the doctor all that you have written to me. The sooner you go, the sooner you will be able to get treatment and start to feel better.
Please, if you haven’t already—go to the hospital and ask them to, when it is safe to do so, induce you on Suboxone.
