Voluntary hysterectomy?

I am 41 years old and not having more children. There is going to be a shortage of tampons and pads. My eight year old daughter will need them in 2-3 years. I have fibroids, pain during sex, and using period products causes me vaginal/cervical pain that radiates to my uterus. I have had two full term pregnancies, both ending in c-section. Can I get my uterus removed, and are the health reasons mentioned above enough to use insurance coverage? Alternately, is there another way to stop my period and make Intercourse less painful?

Female | 41 years old
Complaint duration: Since 2018, when my youngest child was, born.
Medications: Trazadone, wellbutrin, calcitriol, doxycycline to control acne, ambien, xanax, adderall (last three as needed)
Conditions: Depression, anxiety, Vitamin D deficiency.

Hello, Thank you for your question. This is something that we see very often. Having fibroids and heavy vaginal bleeding would be a reason for insurance to cover a hysterectomy. It is a major surgery and there are risks involved including risks with surgery such as injury to surrounding structures, blood clots etc. These are all risks we would discuss before we schedule the surgery. There are other options that can help with decreasing bleeding including medications (progesterone pills), shots (Lupron) and other procedures that do not include major surgery (uterine artery embolization). If you are interested in this, I recommend finding a doctor who specializes in obstetrics and gynecology and can help find the best solution for your situation. Hope this helps!
Hi,

You definitely have enough reasons to consider a hysterectomy and for it to be covered by insurance. Many reasons we do hysterectomies are for abnormal bleeding, fibroids, and pain. There are contraceptive options (like IUD's) than can help with bleeding and pain until you go through menopause as well. Many women stop having symptoms after menopause. A hysterectomy is a common and safe procedure, has risks just like any other surgery but definitely an option for you.

Hope this helps!
