Treatment for an infection differs depending upon whether the infection is in the canal or the ear drum. Some infections require an oral antibiotic but some require only ear drops. This needs to be diagnosed by an ENT doctor. Also ear pain does not always represent an infection. Intermittent pain may be a result of a TMJ (jaw joint) problem.
