Psychotherapy can help you to discover the reason and help to overcome your fear
Generally, phobias like this respond to gradated exposure. The first steps would involve fantasies of being in gradually darker places. Once you are OK with one level, move on to the next darker experience. Once you are comfortable imagining being in total darkness for an extended time (perhaps 10 minuted), you can begin placing yourself in gradually darker places until you are fairly comfortable with the dark.
There are several cognitive behavioral strategies you might try: # try to put a specific name and description to the fear #2 when and here did it first appear#3 what comes to mind when you put yourself back in that time and place? Then behaviorally talk about your above discoveries with someone you trust and experience the dark with them there to reassure you. Let them move further and further away from you so that you are only connected by their reassuring voice. After 13 tries your fear will likely be overcome. Good luck
