10. Kurt Cobain
‘90s icon Kurt Cobain died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in 1994 at age 27. In the years leading up to his suicide, the Nirvana front man struggled with mental health issues and addiction.
The talented yet troubled singer-songwriter began using heroin as a means of self-medicating. Cobain had struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts from an early age. He also suffered from debilitating stomach pain, which doctors were unable to address.
Nirvana became a huge success, bringing the grunge movement to the mainstream. However, Cobain felt conflicted about his success, because he wanted to stay true to himself as an artist.
He married Hole frontwoman Courtney Love in 1992. Both Love and Cobain were heavy drug users.
Despite his success as a musician, Cobain’s mental and physical health continued to deteriorate. He had multiple failed suicide attempts. He fell into a coma after attempting to overdose on drugs. In a separate incident, he locked himself in a closet full of guns after taking an excessive amount of medication.
Concerned, his wife contacted the authorities and begged Cobain to get help. She was struggling to get clean, as well. At his wife’s urging, Cobain checked himself into a rehab clinic, but he left a few days later. On April 5, 1994, the legendary musician committed suicide at his Seattle home.
