Singer K. Michelle Says that Lupus Almost Broke Her

Hearing the words, "You have lupus" can be devastating for anyone to hear and can send anyone's life into a tailspin. This is exactly what happened to R&B singer and television personality K. Michelle. After her brief hiatus from social media, Michelle shared her shocking news to her fans through Twitter.

K. Michelle joined the 1.5 million Americans who are battling lupus.  Lupus is a life-changing autoimmune disease that affects patients through a wide range of symptoms.

Because of its wide-range of symptoms, lupus is often misdiagnosed. Patients will often find themselves going into the hospital without getting a reason as to why they feel very sick. Some of the most common symptoms are fatigue, fever, rash, hair loss, kidney issues, pulmonary problems, stomach problems, dry mouth and even thyroid problems.  Getting an accurate diagnosis of the disease typically means a series of blood tests, x-rays and other scans.

For K. Michelle, her diagnosis came a little differently than others.  K. Michelle was diagnosed through routine blood work that was being performed by her fertility doctor. In her quest to become a mother to twin girls, she sadly became a woman with lupus.

Lupus, like many other autoimmune diseases, has active and dormant periods.  In fact, for some people, the disease remains dormant for their entire lives. K. Michelle is one of the lucky ones whose disease is in a dormant period. This means that, as long as she keeps herself healthy, avoids potential triggers, and checks her blood regularly, she might be lucky enough to never suffer from the symptoms.

Though the disease she has is dormant, K. Michelle struggled to accept her diagnosis.

Though the doctors said her disease was in a dormant period, K. Michelle still struggled with the devastating news and didn't know how to process it.  She went through a rollercoaster of emotions,  and it wasn't easy for her to accept that she could potentially suffer from a chronic illness.

K. Michelle’s tweeted to her fans: “I was devastated for 2 weeks…but my body was tired, my mind was just beat down…”

This was just the beginning of a series of updates describing her journey to her fans and followers. She went on to say that her spirit was "so broken," and then her fertility doctor told her that she might not be able to carry twins full term.

Read on to see how this R&B gradually accepted her diagnosis, and became a mother of two.
