20. You need a daily multivitamin to stay healthy
Many of us are taught from an early age that we need to take a multivitamin each day in order to stay healthy. However, not all of us need a daily multivitamin to stay healthy. Some people get enough essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients from their diets. Instead of taking a multivitamin, you might be able to get the nutrition you need by eating a healthier diet. Eating a balanced, nutritious diet is the best way to ensure you have the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients you need to stay healthy.
Some people have medical conditions that limit their ability to properly absorb food, potentially leading to malnutrition. For example, many patients with Crohn’s disease are prone to malnutrition and dehydration because there is so much inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract that nutrients cannot be absorbed properly. If you have a medical condition that causes malabsorption, you may need to take a multivitamin or even a supplement of a specific vitamin. Patients with pernicious anemia, for instance, cannot absorb vitamin B-12 from food and need to take vitamin B supplements or receive vitamin B-12 injections.
Getting the right nutrition through healthy foods and nutritional supplements like multivitamins can certainly be beneficial for our health. However, if you eat a healthy, balanced diet, you might not need a daily multivitamin to stay healthy. Similarly, just because you eat healthy or take your vitamins every day doesn’t mean you’re immune to health issues. Nutrition is just one component of being healthy."
