Can Better Nutrition Slow the Progression of Cystic Fibrosis?

What's the verdict?

With chronic conditions such as CF, it is often a combination of therapies that are most likely to have a positive impact on life expectancy slowing the progression of the disease. So, in terms of answering the question “Does better nutrition slow the progression of CF?” we should remember that it is a factor in the equation, but it is not the only part. All parts of your body and health are inter-related. It is important to look at it from a holistic perspective. This means understanding and respecting the role that each part has to play in your overall health. Stress is one of these factors. Managing stress is an important part of maintaining a healthy immune system. Nutrition alone will not change the course of CF. However, proper nutrition coupled with a pulmonary rehabilitation program started at the first onset of pulmonary symptoms can positively impact CF. And while loss of lung function is the main cause of mortality in CF patients, clearly there are other nutrition related comorbidities such as CF related liver failure, CFDM, and bone disease that can contribute to CF progression.
