For example, "Jane, I have noticed that you seem unhappy and are negative quite often and that concerns me and makes me sad. Can you think of any reason(s) for you to be unhappy right now? Anything at all. Work, home, kids, job, me?....." Let her think about it and answer. If she comes up with nothing at all or feels depressed, then a psychiatrist may be considered. Don't minimize her feelings. Good luck.
