In my biased opinion, orthodontist should be consulted about the best method or technique to correct dental/facial disharmony. There is a lot more than alignment of teeth to consider for long term improvement. You have the right to get a 2nd or 3rd opinion. The problem is that many dentist provide Invisalign as the only method and it works with variable results depending on many factors. Experienced orthodontists are in the best position to recognize and explain the differences and potential outcome of Invisalign treatment. No system is perfect and people respond differently. I think you will know more and make a better decision if you consult an orthodontist regardless of who does the actual treatment. I like to help general dentists with their Invisalign case if problems aren't resolving. A dentist and orthodontist working together is always a good match and best for you.

Dental orthopedics should mean normalizing upper and lower jaw relationships in all 3 dimensions, transverse, vertical, and horizontal, with forces that are higher than we use to move teeth. The forces need to alter bone at growth sites. Extra oral appliances such as headgears that can move the upper jaw forward or back to normal and intra oral appliances such as rapid palatal expanders widen the upper jaw to its normal width. Some oral appliance are thought to help the mandible grow more forward which may or may not happen. We have given up on trying to retard the excessive forward growth of the lower jaw as a risk of harm to the delicate mandibular joints with the skull. With non growing patients, only surgery can normalize the proper relationship of the two jaws with the skull, which is an orthopedic procedure. Unless jaw relationships are normal, the dental fit of teeth are necessarily compromised. Our profession is orthodontics and dental/facial orthopedics, but we do not do surgical procedures on the jaws. Oral surgeons are trained and skilled in providing that important service.

First, I do not know how long you have worn retainers nor do I know how difficult your original ortho problem was. Your orthodontist should help you decide if possible. otherwise you can gradually reduce the time and see if any changes occur. The safest answer is long term retention is advisable because changes will occur over time which may not be to your liking. Adult patients need longer retention than children , but everyone should anticipate a minimum of 5 years or more. Going without them for one week will prove if you still nee them because the retainer will be a bit uncomfortable when tried in again after a short lay off.
