Dr. Kathia A. Ortiz-cantillo, M.D,

Sleep Medicine Specialist

Dr. Kathia Ortiz-cantillo practices Pulmonary Critical Care and Sleep Medicine in Fernandina Beach, Florida.

Dr. Kathia Ortiz-Cantillo a Pulmonary, Sleep and Critical Care board certified physician in Fernandina Beach, Florida. I’ll start with a little background on myself. My family is originally from Barranquilla, Colombia, which is a beautiful city on the water that is similar in size and weather to Jacksonville, FL.
Barranquilla throws one of the largest carnivals in the world and it is an incredible sight to behold—amazing food, colors and people, so if you ever find yourself in Colombia…get to the Carnival, and you can thank me later!
I completed my residence in Internal Medicine at University Illinois Chicago, I serve a year as a chief resident in Internal Medicine a wonderful year of experiences in academic and as an internist. I then traveled to the southwest Albuquerque, NM where I completed my fellow ship in Pulmonary Critical Care and Sleep Medicine.
I’ve spent most of my medical career in Chicago—I have spewhich is really cold--and I mean 22 degrees below zero cold--so there was only a matter of time before I made my way down to this perfect weather…so I moved to Fernandina Beach, Florida! I worked in a rural hospital which changed 180 degree my vision on health.
I am enamored by the authenticity and warmth of the people in this community and have been inspired to do my part by opening an office to continue caring for them.
At this time I’ll give you a brief description of what I do at Amelia Respiratory and Sleep Medicine LLC
When you hear “pulmonary” that is basically a medical term that includes all things related to the lungs and airways. So we essentially keep you breathing well, which of course is a pretty important thing.
You may also hear a lot about “COPD” which is the name for a chronic lung disease that includes symptoms from bronchitis and emphysema and reduces air flow. Other respiratory problems including cough, asthma, shortness of breath are evaluated at Amelia Respiratory and Sleep Medicine LLC.
The third item that we deal a lot with is sleep disorders, sleep apnea which is a condition where breathing repeatedly stops and starts. This happens often while people are sleep and prevents them from getting a full nights sleep which impacts their overall well-being.
These are just some basic descriptions to give you a better idea of the work that’s going on here if you didn’t already know.
My main objective is to provide the best possible medical care to individuals affected by lung diseases. I believe that an open conversation with patients in combination with a thorough physical examination and ancillary testing represents the fundamental steps in understanding lung diseases and the impact of these diseases in the quality of lives of the affected individuals.
I’ll leave you with one final quote that I think beautifully sums up the type of impact each of you represents:
“Everybody can be great. Because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You don’t have to know physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”
