Great question! The answer is, actually, pretty straight forward because muscles do not contract or tighten spontaneous without a reason. So muscle spasm, big "knots" in muscles, loss of movement due to muscle tightness, etc. is a response to something abnormal as the body attempts to adapt to that irritation. That irritation can be faulty joint function, poor posture, emotional stressors, nerve inflammation or others. With all that being said...the best place to start is with your doctor of chiropractic. At our office, should the need for massage therapy be present...we have an entire team of exceedingly capable licensed massage therapists to help and aid the restoration of pain free, normal function.

Neck pain that's persistent is absolutely no fun...and makes day to day life difficult and far less enjoyable. The age-old description of the "crick in the neck" nearly always has its origins in mechanical dysfunction...meaning the interplay or function of related parts of your neck aren't working correctly. Activities such as a sudden neck movement or "sleeping on it wrong" are characteristically only aggravations of this underlying mechanical problem that wasn't causing symptoms at that point...it's also why yours has been so persistent. A thorough exam and assessment should quickly get to the cause and the physicians in our office get terrific results for people suffering from neck pain.

Great question! First....the sound may seem to be a "cracking" but I assure you there is no such thing! If your doctor identified abnormal function in the region and is working to restore normalcy to the area....absolutely! As is common practice...physical examination, appropriate history and diagnostic testing will identify people who may not benefit from spinal adjustment or "reduction" in the neck area....but barring any contraindications, the utilization of the procedure is just fine and exceedingly effective! Actually, the noise you've heard is the release of nitrogen and carbon dioxide gases from the joint fluids. It's known as "articular cavitation" and is a completely benign byproduct of moving the spinal joint (or any joint for that matter!) in this manner! The neck adjustment itself, in the current body of research, has been shown to be not only safe but exceedingly effective!
