Is a heart CT scan safe?

Yes. If only a calcium study there is minimal radiation. If a CTA there is a low risk from injection of contrast. Radiation is higher but still low risk.

Are spinal X-rays cancer causing?

There is an extremely low risk of spinal X-rays causing cancer, though not zero. If the study is medically indicated the benefits outweigh the risks.

How do you prepare for a lung CT scan?

Most are done without contrast. May have to not eat for several hours. Follow directions from facility doing the study.

Death can occur very rarely, about 1 in 75000. People with abnormal kidney function can develop worsening of their kidney disease. Those most at risk are elderly with coexisting diseases, have a history of severe allergies or allergy to contrast. Sometimes the IV comes out of the vein and the contrast may be injected into the soft tissues which can cause pain and swelling. The technologist should have you fill out a questionaire to determine if you have any significant risk factors. We do hundreds of contrast studies a day and rarely see a severe reaction.

Depends on the facility. Anywhere from 1 hour to several days. Usually need to get results from referring MD which may take longer.

When is a whole body CT scan needed for kids?

Tough to answer. Usually no, but if all other tests are negative, negative may be useful. I would talk to your doctor.

May be helpful. Not sure how specific. Also can rule out other problems such as a tumor.

It can vary depending on what they are looking for, probably 30-60 minutes. He may need sedation depending on his age and ability to lie still.

How do duplex and standard ultrasounds differ?

Duplex add Doppler blood flow info. Useful to look for possible IUGR or other vascular problems. No other significant difference.
