Now that I have said that, most people do not get a gold crown due to cosmetics and cost. Zirconia crowns are cosmetic and have strength to last in molar areas, they are not indestructible and occassionaly I have seen one break. PFM (porcelain fused to metal) has a metal sub layer and porcelain baked one top (think porcelain coated sink), they have a long track record but can have porcelain chip off in molar areas and are very hard on a natural tooth paired in the bite with it.

How much residual tooth is present? Each situation poses different challenges for an extraction. In general, if an infection is present, the patient should be on an antibiotic at least 3 days prior to extraction, sometimes longer. If a tooth has minimal amount of structure above gum line or a history of root canal there is a high chance of a surgical extraction needed. OK... so let me just run through an average extraction. We utilize local anesthetic to numb the tooth and surrounding tissues. An instrument (periotome or periosteal elevator) is used to push gum tissue away from tooth. Another instrument (elevator) is used to apply pressure to lift tooth to begin detachment from the socket (bone). Lastly, a forcep is used to create a pattern of movement with the tooth that expands the socket (bone) to effectively remove the tooth.

In general gaps can be closed with orthodontics which includes braces or Invisalign. Veneers which will cover the entire front surface of the teeth visible in your smile. Bonding can be performed which is white filling applied to sides of teeth to close gaps. Each option has pros and cons. Braces or Invisalign can take 1-2 years to complete and require your cooperation. As well as a retainer to be worn to keep your teeth in position after treatment is completed. Veneers require some tooth preparation which includes drilling the enamel surface off of the teeth which makes room for the veneer. Bonding is weaker in hold and overall strength, can stain over time and has a tendency to needs replacement in a few years. Cost for each option would require a consultation. In general Bonding is least expensive followed by orthodontics and most costly is veneers.
