It was the right thing to see your ophthalmologist to check for orbital cellulitis and to have your thyroid levels measured for TED. I’m glad you had an MRI which would have been my suggestion. Did they do both a non-contrast as well as a contrast-enhanced orbital MRI? Further testing could be a non-contrast CT of your orbital area under the care of your medical doctor to check for cavernous hemangioma. Thank you for the question. I hope you discover a diagnosis.

Thank you for your concern about your mother’s vision. The quick answer is yes, patients who are Diabetic for many years or if A1-c is uncontrolled are at higher risk of developing cataracts early. But if your mother keeps her blood sugar under control and keeps her A1-c level 7.0 or below may develop cataracts at the normal rate of 65 and older. Yearly eye exams are very important to monitor for other complications of diabetes such as retinal hemorrhaging which unfortunately can be sight-threatening if left untreated. But don’t be too worried about mature cataracts. Cataract surgery has one of the very best rates of satisfaction and also has the potential to improve quality of life. Some of my patients chose distance-only lens implants which insurance covers and then they only use over-the-counter readers. Other patients chose to upgrade with multifocal implants and thus they only occasionally wear eyeglasses after their cataracts are removed.

It’s important to wear her corrective glasses or contacts to ensure that her eye with amblyopia will have the best possible vision. I usually remind patients to buy safety lenses in their glasses to protect the good eye from hazards. Some Optometrists recommend eye patching to work and try to improve the amblyopic eye and the times depend on many factors. There are patching schedules of 30 minutes all the way up to 4 hours per day while watching TV. Discuss those schedules with her optometrist.

Yes, hot steam can cause the cornea to swell and get cloudy. But if you keep your eyes closed when applying steam to your sinuses, the warmth can open up oil glands in the eyelids which helps balance the tear film, as long as the steam is not too hot. The temperature for oil glands is 103-110 degrees Fahrenheit for 5-10 minutes. Mischelle Gragg, Therapeutic Optometrist Houston Eye Professionals at Baybrook.

There are many different potential causes of red eyes at the end of the day. An in person eye health exam with an eye doctor is the best for evaluating your cornea, eyelids, conjunctiva and measuring intra ocular pressure. With computer use increasing, another cause of redness could be that you need an updated glasses prescription or healthier types of the newest UV protection contact lenses. An Optometrist like myself would be happy to do a thorough eye exam to determine the cause and then recommend the best treatment for your eyes.
