Dr. Welborn Jr.'s career in medicine began after he earned his medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1962. He then went on to perform his internship and residency in surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 1963 and 1968, respectively. He also completed a fellowship in thoracic surgery at St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1971. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), Dr. Welborn Jr. is board-certified in surgery & thoracic and cardiac surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS).
