It depends of many factors, most of them being related to the patient. It is important what is the disease the resection is going to be made for, how urgent or emergent the operation is, any history of prior abdominal surgeries and wether the colon is blocked or not. Somewhat less important: the type of surgery, whether its laparoscopic or open, and the segment that needs to be removed.. My surgeries last between 45 minutes and 2 1/2 to 3 hours.

Your intention is more than laudable, it is heroic and shows amazing friendship! No, that has never been done before. And it will never be done, because transplants are done with the intent of saving the life or function of the patient when there is no other alternative. Because there are many alternatives for patients to still ambulate even if they are amputees, this will never be taken into consideration. The risks greatly outweigh the benefits. When you donate a kidney that is one thing but when you donate something that the recipient could live without , the risk of rejection of the transplant makes the procedure unthinkable. What your friend needs to understand is that, many times, her quality of life will be much better after an amputation than before. Many times an amputation is postponed because of the patient fear of what they will become, not understanding that, by going two-three times to the wound clinic every week and then, after years of doing that up, an amputee nonetheless, makes the patient slave of his or her wounded leg. Best regards, R. Constantine

You should go to the Emergency Room and, upon working you up, they will call a surgeon. You cannot possibly be sure it is your appendix, and, even if you were right, diagnosing yourself is dangerous.
