Hello,

First, you should have your back checked by your chiropractor. I can't tell what is wrong with you from an email, but I can give you some suggestions which do not replace the need for a medical evaluation. It sounds like you overdid the Zumba. Whenever starting a new exercise program, it is always a good idea to start slow and do less than you think you can. It is so easy to do too much and end up paying for it later. It sounds like you have inflamed your lower back, either irritated nerves, disc, or muscles. A chiropractor can examine you, find out what is wrong, and get you back on the road to Zumba. If you put heat on your low back, take it off and use ice instead for 15 to 20 minutes, then take it off for 20 minutes. You can reapply as often as you need to and it will help with inflammation and pain.

Hello,

This Is Dr. Steven Moon, Concord Chiropractic.

You should be checked by a qualified Chiropractor to see what is going on in your case. Many things can cause problems like this, including: pinched or irritated nerves, disc narrowing or degeneration, and arthritic spurring. You should be checked to make sure what it is. When you gain weight, it does put more pressure on the spine and it is not linear. If you put on an extra 10 pounds, it can increase pressure on your back by 100 pounds!

Best wishes in good health,

Hello from Dr. Moon!

This could be from several reasons, and you should be checked by a chiropractor to see what exactly is going on. Since it happens when you lay down, I would check your pillow as a possible aggravating factor. Your pillow should support your neck, but let your head fall back a little. I like "My Pillow," but make sure you get the correct size. We even sell them in our office.
Normally, this should not happen. There is probably misalignment of the vertebrae pinching or irritating nerves, or there could be degenerative changes like disc narrowing or arthritis. These things get worse if they aren't taken care of, even if changing the pillow helps, so an appointment is a really good idea.

Good luck!

Chiropractors and physical therapist are very different, but are both helpful for back problems.
Briefly, Chiropractors check for structural misalignment of the joints in the body, especially the spinal vertebrae and pelvis. Misalignments can cause irritation or put pressure on the nerves or spinal cord. Chiropractors use a variety of procedures to adjust the joints, improving mobility and reducing pain. Chiropractors are Doctors and can diagnose, and can send patients to physical therapy.
Physical Therapists usually will give a patient exercises to do during physical therapy, and at home. These exercises help strengthen and stretch various body areas to help improve structure. Most physical therapists are not Doctors.
Both Physical therapists and Chiropractors can use physiotherapy procedures like electrical muscle stimulation, ultrasound, hot or cold packs, traction, etc.

Recent research found that the best results were reached when a combination of Chiropractic AND exercise was performed.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery!
