Acupuncture works in a variety of ways depending on the system and technique. The short answer to your question is that acupuncture can help regulate hormonal fluctuations, regulate the heart and breathing, reduce nervous anxiety through regulating the blood flow and other such physiological issues.

Along with acupuncture the practitioner may also suggest cupping or guasha to help relax the physical muscles and may suggest herbal formulas or dietary or lifestyle ideas particular to your case. They will most likely talk to you about where your stresses manifest - both where do you feel it in your body as well as what aspects of your social/work/family life elicit stress responses.

The acupuncture can also help you sleep better, digest your food better and give you a sense of separation from your stressful surroundings when you work with a qualified L.Ac. who has experience with stress. It's more than just the needles, but an understanding of how to manage your way through your life.

Acupuncture does help with infertility in most cases. You would want yourself and your husband to both get treatments since it is not always only the woman's issue. You also would want to find an acupuncturist who specializes or has a lot of good experience with infertility. There are acupuncture clinics that primarily focus on fetility only, I would recommend using one of those. Be sure to find a location that you feel comfortable in.

It is impossible to remove fat "locally" by any means. To rid yourself of belly fat, you need to lower the fat content of your entire body. Acupuncture can help assist you in your goals, but there will also need to be dietary changes and physical activity. The acupuncturist can help you find a good combination of activities, dietary suggestions, herbal formulas and acupuncture to help you reach your goal.

Be sure to find a licensed acupuncturist in your area (L.Ac.) and find someone who works on weight loss - not all practitioners will do this. Also be aware that there is no magic treatment for losing fat, it is a process.

I have personally treated many people for allergies and they were able to live without having the allergy anymore. Acupuncture has even helped patients with shellfish and nut allergies to the point where the patients can now consume them with no dangers to their health.

There is a wonderful acupuncture protocol known as NAIT, that focuses on clearing the body of allergies. It basically reprograms the body to accept allergens as "safe non-self" instead of "dangerous non-self".

With a qualified practitioner and someone who is familiar with NAIT or similar styles, you should be able to rid yourself of the allergy if not reduce it greatly.
Keep in mind that from my experience, animal allergies seem to be the hardest to treat, but most plant-based and food allergies are easier, as is dust and airborne allergies.

Be sure to find a licensed acupuncturist in your area (L.Ac.) and find one who knows how to treat allergies.

Generally treatments are minimally painful to zero painful, it all depends on the technique and strategy the practitioner is using. Some points are more painful to receive than others based on their physical location, but a well trained practitioner can even needle the more painful body areas with less pain than you'd get from a regular doctor.

Most often the patients get more relaxed after the treatment starts and once you're used to the initial prick and get a feel of what the needling actually feels like then you're anxiety over it can subside and you can even experience less pain. This is because the anticipation of pain creates a tension that can make the needling seem more painful, but once your are over the anticipation you receive it easier.

Find a good practitioner in your area and ask them your questions and let them know your worries and they should be able to talk you through your first experience kindly.

It is very effective for pain of all types, including arthritic pain. It has minimal to no side-effects and can last a long time - though it may take a few treatments to get to the point of long term relief. That really all depends on your personal condition and the quality of the practitioner.

The most common side effect of acupuncture is a strong sense of relaxation and aa better sense of wellbeing. Minor side effects are irritation near the area of insertion or some numbness, tingling, redness and maybe a drop of blood. More serious side effects are bruising and aches in the area (usually from poor needle technique - generally from less experienced practitioners or lesser trained ones). Major side effects are bleeding, internal injury, etc. These are RARE and generally occur from negligence or by very untrained people. This is why it is important to go to a Licensed Acupuncturist (L.Ac.) not to some PT who sticks needles in you or a Chiropractor who "got certified" or an MD who calls himself an "acupuncturist" because they took some classes and there is no law against physicians doing it. Go find a licensed practitioner (L.Ac) and you should have zero to minimum side effects. Mostly, you'll experience your symptoms being relieved and a better sense of well being. If you start to experience any pain or issues, tell them right away and they will help.

Some come in for weekly or monthly treatments to help stay on top of the pain and most come in a few times and then don't need to see me until some other heavy issue happens.

I don't know what you mean by worse and I don't know what you were being treated for, but there are times when a condition seems to get exacerbated after a treatment. This can be the result of many things, depending on the issue or condition being treated. In some cases, like fatigue, the patient could be more tired after the treatment, but then later it gets better as the patient rested. There can be more pain after a treatment of pain, but the pain will more quickly go away after the treatment day (a day or two later is gone completely). Both of these are an example of the treatment releasing something in the body that first made it seem worse, but was actually an improvement in the long run. Be sure to tell your practitioner what happened so they can assess.

I have had very good success treating chronic fatigue with acupuncture. Your practitioner would have to make a differential diagnosis as to what is the root cause from a Chinese medical point-of-view. Once they have that it is a matter of time.

It will take a few treatments and maybe a few months to get it under control depending on how severe your case is, then it should be maintained with regular interval treatments. Your practitioner may also prescribe herbs, foods, or other lifestyle habits that could assist you further. I know that one of my patients started coming in with an energy level of 3, leaving with energy level of 5. In time she would come in at a 5 and get to a 7. When we had her at a 7 consistently we were able to reduce treatment frequency as foods, rest and lifestyle balanced.

Find a licensed acupuncturist in your area (L.Ac) and be sure to work with someone you feel comfortable with. If you don't like your first choice, you can find others but the medicine will help in the long run.

No one can know how long it will take for an individual to get results for issues like anxiety or other systemic problems. Some people get relief very quickly and others take a longer time. It all depends on your individual case.

I'm sorry that I cannot give you a clear answer but no one would be able to. I can tell you that acupuncture has done wonders for many of my patients that have a variety of anxiety issues. Have patience and feel free to ask your practitioner how things are progressing and be sure to tell them how you feel you are or are not progressing.

Keep in mind that not only the acupuncture, but lifestyle habits, your community and weather can be factors in your wellbeing too - so talk to your practitioner about other ways you can work through this.

Good luck.

Yes, absolutely. In Chinese medicine, we have never separated the physical body from the emotional/psychological body and so we know the correlation between physical pains caused by emotional trauma. Some practitioners are more skilled than others in this arena (as some are more skilled with physical symptoms or specific conditions).

There is a style of acupuncture that focuses more directly on emotional treatments call "5-Element" acupuncture. You would need to find a "Worsley Style" 5-Element practitioner to be specific - one who treats using Worsley's methods. Some people call themselves 5-Element or use a different form of 5-Element that isn't really emotionally rooted or "element" rooted. Other acupuncturists could also help, as with our medicine as we treat the emotions, we treat the physical and as we treat the physical we are treating the emotions. However, a Worlsey 5-Element practitioner might be more suited to gentle conversations that help guide the healing.

Find someone in your area to help and ask if they are experienced in emotional work. Here is a website for Worsley Practitioners. It is not a full list, but a good starting point:
