It is known that strokes and heart attacks occur 2 to 4 times as frequently in diabetics than in non diabetics.
An article that appeared in an August 8, 2018 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine reviewed the outcomes of 271,000 diabetics in the Swedish National Diabetes Register. I compared them with more than 1,000,000 non-diabetics over 5.7 years by age, sex and cardiovascular risk factors (Alc; cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, blood pressure, absence of smoking and urine protein).
The study found that diabetics who achieved targets for AIC of 7% (glucose control), LDL cholesterol of 97mg or lower, blood pressure of 140/80, urine protein of 10-30mgm per 100cc of urine, and did not smoke had a similar incidence of heart attacks, strokes and death as non diabetics.
The article also emphasized the importance of physical activity and weight loss to decreasing cardiovascular disease.
With proper care and achievement of these goals, all diabetics can live healthy and long lives.
