I have had 6 root canals in the past. I need another one now. Why is this?

Brushing, flossing and routine cleaning are excellent ways of preventing cavities from starting and helping restorations last longer. However, once a cavity begins and a filling is done, especially if it is deep or large, or a tooth is traumatized, the damage to the nerve is irreversible and irreparable, so eventually in one’s life, a root canal becomes necessary. If you have had 6 over a number of years, then it suggests that your past history was that of constantly needing dental treatment. If they are all recent, then one needs to evaluate why your dentist cannot control the rampant condition. Root canals are not an elective procedure, they are done in response to pain symptoms. If you are not getting pain, you should re-evaluate the dentist’s diagnosis. Perhaps a second opinion to put your mind at ease could help. Good luck with your treatment.

Many toddlers and children grind their teeth significantly. It is not normal, but not unusual either. Unfortunately there is not much anyone can do, as a grinding appliance cannot be used as it will hinder jaw development. The teeth will wear prematurely, but hopefully if she loses the habit before the adult teeth start to come in, she may start again on a “clean slate”. Good luck.

Hello,
All fillings have a finite lifespan, so they do need periodic replacement, on average every 8-10 years. However, if there is pain, that is not an indication to replace again, in fact the contrary. If symptoms worsen, that could be indication that the nerve is unable to recover, and hence a root canal could become necessary. Good luck.

Why are my dentures not setting right?

Dentures often need adjustments after they are delivered to you. It is best to go to whoever made them and have them adjusted so they fit better.

How often should a 7-year-old go to the dentist?

Another important point is that cavities grow more rapidly in baby teeth, so detecting them earlier makes for an easier fix.

A pulpectomy is only the start of a root canal procedure by removing the root tissue only. It is intended to alleviate pressure buildup in the tooth and hence reduce pain. If pain is worsening, it could indicate that there is still nerve tissue remaining, or that the infection is severe enough that your body’s immune system is unable to fight it. Contact your dentist right away and he may prescribe you an antibiotic to help the situation. Good luck.

#2 tooth with deep cavity - why infected after filling?

This is not an unusual situation, and many teeth with large cavities go through a similar path. Although the pain is gone, it may return, and the tooth nerve may possibly be dead too. Only way to confirm is with vitality testing. A root canal is rarely done preventively, usually reactively to pain. Tooth #2 is an important tooth for chewing, so I would not give up on it so easily. Many deep cavities can lead to further infections, and it is impossible to prevent entirely. It’s like saying “I want to drive a car, but I don’t ever want to get into an accident”. Some things are simply inevitable. However, good oral hygiene and regular professional care improves your odds, just like driving safely. Good luck.

Although many OTC whitening products contain the active ingredient for whitening, hydrogen peroxide, they are often not high enough in concentration to make an appreciable difference. I never recommend against them, as they do not harm. I merely caution patients to have a realistic level of expectation. If it is not potent enough to achieve the desired results, my patients visit me for a professional version which gives far superior results. Good luck.
