What is physical rehabilitation?

Physical rehabilitation is a type of therapy designed to bring the musculoskeletal system back to working order suffering from traumas, injuries, or surgical procedures. Physical therapists and psychiatrists use this therapy as a way to preserve muscular function. It's especially important for long-term hospital patients, as they lose a considerable amount of muscle mass throughout their stay. Rehabilitation can slow down this loss and conserve muscle functions.

A properly trained physiatrist and physical therapist can help eliminate pain from certain injuries, or help a patient regain flexibility after the body has recovered from certain events. These events could be a trauma, surgery, or an injury.

Physical rehab is an alternative to surgery

While some injuries require surgery to heal completely, physical therapy may allow the body to heal naturally while forgoing the need for patients to have invasive procedures. Stroke patients, for instance, may experience a loss of mobility on one side of their body. Physical therapy for stroke patients can help recreate the lost neural connections associated with this area and recover muscular function.

It can be used to prevent injuries

This is mainly in sports. Physical therapy can be used to prevent athletes from injuries. In sports, regular physical therapy sessions can keep the muscles in shape and prevent injuries from overexertion.

It can also prevent aging muscles

As the person grows older, the body loses flexibility and mobility. Physical therapy can significantly slow down the aging process and keep the person active for as long as possible.

It's also great for women's health

Some specialists are focused on the particular needs of the female body, and are specialized in providing aid during pregnancy, as well as post-partum care.
