Oral Surgeons perform extractions very routinely, and hence are more comfortable with them than a general dentist who performs other procedures like fillings and crowns routinely. Also, Oral Surgeons are often certified to administer IV or General Anesthesia, which few general dentists are certified to provide, and which is often appropriate for wisdom tooth extraction.
