Chapter 4: Variable-length Lacanian analyses and the question of brief analysis: Raul Moncayo and Ayelet HirshfeldBy RAUL MONCAYO, AYELET HIRSHFELD

"Brief treatment can be viewed as an ideology of the consumer society of late capitalism. Clients are faced these days with an overwhelming variety of brief therapy products aimed at eliminating specifi c phobias, boosting self-esteem, combating depression, eliminating various addictions, and more. Brief therapy responds to a need to increase access to treatment, provide cost-effective treatments within the managed-care culture, and respond to the requests for evidencebased, effi cient, empirically validated treatments (Levenson, 1995)."

When we look back we see that in the late 1890's & early 1900's most mental health providers were in fact physicians. Psychoanalysis was invented by a neurologist, Dr. Freud, Lacan was himself a psychiatrist. Many psychiatrists are psychoanalytically oriented and provide the "talking cure." Therefore, i believe the most important consideration is not whether it is a psychiatrist or a psychologist, but whom you feel more comfortable speaking to, and feel you have established rapport with.

Definitely. Child therapy (not adolescents) heavily depends on parental involvement. Psychologists differ in treatment modality - some engage in parent-child therapy, while others in play or talk therapy with the child (depending on their age) with parent collateral meetings. Either way, you will play an integral part in the success of your child therapy. I encourage you to bring up these questions openly when choosing a psychologist, and make sure that you feel comfortable with their approach.

I am very happy for your 6 months sobriety.

Zoloft or any other SSRI may be helpful, as it sounds you have been self-medicating with alcohol for your long standing anxiety and depression. As you probably know, while alcohol actually increases anxiety and depression, Zoloft or other SSRIs alleviate both anxiety and depression. I will encourage you to also reach out to a clinical psychologist as psychotherapy is very helpful for treating anxiety and depression.

Teen years are tough for adults as well:), they often times bring up different issues from the parents' own teen years and it may be a good idea for the parent to consult with a psychologist to guide them during this time. It can allow you a sounding board, to know when and if your being overly concerned is justified or no reason for concern.

I am sorry for your pain. It seems that you suffer from great anxiety which contributes to some of the somatic complaints you mention as well as from depressed mood. I would recommend adding psychotherapy, "talk therapy" which has been found very helpful for pain management, anxiety & depression. Allowing the body to "speak its pain" offers great support & symptom relief on top of medications. I hope that you find a Dr that "gets you" and your pain and frustration soon. I am very sorry for your loss. Dealing with loss of loved ones takes time, and can include various reactions such as great sadness, anxiety, psychosomatic reactions, panic attacks and others. They are best worked through in psychotherapy, or as we call it "talk therapy" where we get a chance to process and work through the loss. This is often followed by great symptom relief.
