Please read the ingredient labels at the grocery store before bringing it home. Some foods that are recommended for kidney disease are low in phosphorus, potassium, and protein. 

Foods Low in Phosphorus  

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Bread, pasta, rice
  • Rice milk
  • Peanut butter
  • Corn and rice cereals
  • Ice cream
  • Vegetable soup

Foods Low in Potassium

  • Apples
  • Peaches
  • Carrots
  • Green beans
  • White bread and pasta
  • White rice
  • Rice milk or dahi with rice
  • Cooked rice and wheat cereals,
  • Fresh fruits and vegetables, like grapes, or cranberry juice, sodas/pop, such as lemon-lime or homemade tea     

Eat small portions of food low in protein. To help protect your kidneys, your body uses protein and produces waste. The kidneys work as a filter to remove that waste. Eating more protein means more stress on your diseased kidneys.

Types of protein you  could eat

  • A cooked, small portion of chicken, fish, or meat. About 2 to 3 ounces/day
  • A portion of dairy that is a ½ cup of milk or yogurt, or one slice of cheese.
  • Almond milk.
  • Vitamin D3, 50.000 units /week
  • Iron replacement 

Foods to avoid

You should avoid foods that are rich in potassium and phosphorus. These are:

  • Oranges
  • Bananas
  • Orange juice
  • Potatoes
  • Tomatoes
  • Brown and wild rice
  • Bran cereals
  • Whole-wheat bread and pasta
  • Beans and nuts
  • Meat, poultry, fish
  • Bran cereals and oatmeal
