Diabetes Is
A metabolic disorder characterized by elevated levels of Glucose within the Blood; known as Hyperglycemia.
First Described Over 2,000 Years Ago
This disorder caused excessive thirst, weight-loss, and sweet-smelling urine that attracted flies. Before the discovery of Insulin, there was little hope for people with Diabetes.
Insulin Was Discovered 100 Years Ago
The discovery of Insulin brought about major advances within the understanding of Diabetes.
Blood Glucose Regulation
The regulation of Glucose within the Blood depends on the release of Insulin; from the Pancreas. This release is in response to the rise in Blood Glucose Levels, after a meal.
The Hormone Insulin
Once released, Insulin travels through the Blood to the cellular membrane receptor sites. This triggers the Glucose Transporters to relocate to the Cell Membrane.
Without Insulin
The Cellular Glucose Transporters do not receive the signal to relocate to the cellular membrane; for up-take of Glucose. Glucose is an important cellular energy source.
Blood Glucose Levels
With the inability of Glucose to cross-over the cellular membrane, this results in the accumulation of Glucose in the Blood; resulting in Hyperglycemia.
Today, Diabetes Is Categorized As
Type 1 Diabetes, Type 2 Diabetes, Gestational Diabetes, and Secondary Diabetes. This system of Diabetes classifications is based on the Etiology, or the underlying cause.
