The shape of the future is unknown but not undetermined. The number of Americans being infected by the new virus is in excess of 120,000 every 3 to 4 hours. There is some evidence that these infections are fatal primarily for the unvaccinated but breakthrough infections are reported for even those who have had the basic jabs with a single booster. It seems clear that omicron will be the dominant strain in the U.S. and the world in a very short time. A mandated response and better resource (vaccines/masks) sharing (worldwide) is called for but is clearly not about to occur.
It's small wonder that the first transition to an ethnic and racial nonwhite, non-wealthy, dominated democracy due in less than a few years if voting restrictions are not supported is picking up the pandemic/endemic theme with the virtual banning and firing of public health-minded advisers and educators. So, enter the profiteers, the liars, the racists promising the return of a golden age, so long as people are subjected to minority rule. No one knows whether the pandemic is burning itself out and will end as an endemic returner or if lethality will increase via infection of more species or joining forces with the deadly single-stranded RNA Ebola virus. The vulnerability of children and the poor and the loss of control of women’s bodies (again the poor) are once again noteworthy.
