Close to 30 million documented infections, 501,000 deaths, evidence of deadly new variants which may evade current vaccines, lack of sufficient vaccines, varying state and county masking, and social distancing rules, regulations, etc. The viruses are evolving all the while. The USA is experiencing a fire, flood, avalanche, road, air, and train disaster. Many are invoking an "end of days" scenario. But even such scenarios differ greatly. The behavior of a majority of the Republican party in willingness to embrace a "Trump really won" falsity apparently resulted in the sixth of January attempted insurrection which was clearly incited by the ex-President. The impeachment by the House and refusal to convict by the Senate is more of the same moral division. While the Merchant of Malice is beset by state-sponsored legal actions which are likely to result in some guilty verdicts, the likelihood of Trump being actually imprisoned is low because of his knowledge of details of U.S. and international secrecy operations.
Despite a not great intellect and casual attention, he has probably retained enough to cause trouble by blabbing. That he would do so is certain. He would need some kind of perpetual monitored house arrest. His escape to a friendly not extraditable location is more likely. He may or may not retain control of the Republican Party but the efforts to undo the damage he has caused will require massive use of executive orders. The discovery of a Texas grid, the confusion over covid relief, the emergency executive approval of Johnson and Johnsons single shot with failure to be able to produce projected volume requiring hands-off by Biden/Harris, Cabinet appointments are being challenged and delayed by a GOP using the playbook used against Obama/Biden.
Closer to home Tiger Woods was involved in a one-car rollover accident on Hawthorne Boulevard in Rancho Palos Verdes. This stretch has resulted in numerous accidents over the past three years. It has been a lucrative site for ticketing and fines and heavy vehicles have their own emergency runoff. But Tiger coming to grief occasions a much overdue and needed reevaluation of the road's architecture. He was probably overdriving the road going too fast or not. But his celebrity status will garner a review that the death and maiming of ordinary mortals could never attain. I certainly hope that he can return to the game. I never cared about golf having tried it once while in the USAF until the Tiger prowled the dunes and links.
