Musculoskeletal pain during pregnancy is common. Pregnancy hormones loosen ligaments causing the spine & pelvis to move differently. This leads to gait changes, movement difficulties & chronic pain. A 2018 study found that 70% of 184 women reported having low back pain during their pregnancy. Overall, 80% of participants reported generalized back pain & 32% reported hip pain. In addition, 33% had hand & wrist pain, which is often the culprit of carpal tunnel syndrome, worse in pregnancy due to swelling that causes nerve compression. Since carpal tunnel surgery is usually not recommended during pregnancy, patients turn to chiropractic treatment.

It is recommended that pregnant women avoid many prescription pain medications, because of adverse effects to their baby. In fact, many common over-the-counter remedies are not considered safe during pregnancy. For example, pain meds like ibuprofen, could cause the fetus's heart connection to close prematurely, which could be life-threatening. The good news is that studies consistently show that Chiropractic treatment; reduces back pain, reduces in-utero constraints, shortens time in labor, improves postpartum recovery & is effective in reducing hand/wrist pain. Plus, the Webster technique is successful in converting breech presentations to a normal cephalic presentation. https://www.caryobgyn.com
