There is so much attention going to mental health now. It used to be a taboo thing. You were looked at strangely if you even mentioned someone having mental problems, much less admit that you may have a problem and you see a therapist. People are coming around now, and the more people who see a therapist, the more they go on about how much they love it.

The honest truth is, everyone could benefit from seeing a therapist. There is something relaxing and refreshing about talking to an outside party about your issues. Someone who has learned and is trained on how the human brain works and interprets things. Someone who will not judge you, no matter what you may tell them. Someone who validates your feelings and subtly teaches you how to handle them and overcome them.

I used to be the person who thought there was no reason for me to see a therapist. I didn't have any major behavioral issues. I'm not a sociopath or psychopath or bipolar or majorly depressed. I do suffer from mild anxiety, something I am not able to completely handle on my own every day without the help from medication. But, my main problem is the fact that I let other people's opinions get to me. There is no reason to allow that, no reason to be such a people pleaser. And after spending the majority of my life trying to do what others want me to do to, I had finally decided I was ready to live for me.

I still have a long way to go, but with the help of my therapist, I have made great progress. I say all this to show that seeing a therapist is nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, I personally believe everyone could benefit from it. Whether you think you have problems or not. Just having someone to talk to about things and know that they will not judge you or tell you what they think you should do. They have a way of helping you figure out what you want for yourself.

Therapists are trained in such a way that, without saying "you should" or "this is what you need to do" or "I think you need to..", they can bring out what your desires and wants for yourself are. They get you to realize how you need to handle the problems you have, either with yourself or others, in a healthy way. Sure, if you get stuck, they give you advice. But, they are so good at reading people and learning about you, that they only give you advice that fits you.

Seeing a therapist helps you to overcome the issues that you may or may not see that you have in your life. They help you to be you and not feel ashamed of it. Therapists help you realize that what you think is going on is validated and help you to rearrange the way you think in a healthy way.

My life has changed and will continue to change in a great way. I have learned how to better communicate my wants and feelings with those I love in my life. I am now able to handle things in a healthy way, a way that not only allows people to know my thoughts without making them angry, but also allows me to live my life for me and be a better version of myself for my family. You can't take care of anyone if you are not well yourself.

Just think, if you are physically ill are you able to be there for your family 100% and cook or clean or work or whatever other responsibilities you have for your family? No, you can't. You are not able to do the things that need to be done for others when you are not feeling well, so why would you think you could be there for them if you are not mentally well? If you are focused on other things that are bothering you? Your mind reeling on the event that happened the other day that gave you such anxiety you still feel it when you think of it and end up huddled in the corner with difficulty breathing? Felling like the world is caving in on you? Mental health is just as important as physical health, and I believe it is time we all start treating it so.
