Psoriasis can be defined as a skin condition that affects most, if not all, part of your skin. Symptoms can be skin redness, flaky skin, or even pus-filled sacs. To date, medical doctors do not know what exactly causes psoriasis to surface or occur. Some have proposed that genetics play a role in the development of psoriasis.

Let’s Break it Down

Here are the symptoms of psoriasis that you may experience if you are diagnosed with the condition:

  1. Red, dry, or dark spots on the skin that are typically covered under white flakes or dry skin.
  2. Rashes occur in skin folds, scalp, or even genitals.
  3. Itching at the affected sites where redness or white flakes are located.
  4. Discoloration of finger/toenails. The nails also can look cracked.

Besides the physical symptoms, psoriasis can also have an impact on your mental health as well. From feelings of embarrassment for having the disease, you might experience depression or anxiousness. Know that you are not alone and there are professionals who are here to help.

Can You Get Tested for Psoriasis? Is There Even a Test?

Your primary care physician can assess the skin that is affected by asking a few questions to determine if you have psoriasis. In some cases, the physician will order a small sample of the affected skin to be sent to a lab and checked for psoriasis.

Psoriasis Treatments

There are no known treatments to cure psoriasis. There are, however, many treatments that help with the symptoms of psoriasis such as creams, ointments, pills, or even injections. There is also a form of light therapy called “PhotoTherapy” that slows the growth of skin and thus controlling the growth of psoriasis on your skin. Discuss these options with your primary care provider and try different types of treatments to find out which one works best for you.
