A persistent cough is a symptom of cystic fibrosis, but to those experiencing such a symptom, it is so much more. Sticky mucus builds up in the lungs and digestive organs. It causes difficulties breathing and processing foods, and makes developing infections much more easily. CF can lead to wider complications such as CF-related diabetes and organ damage. Generally, all men with cystic fibrosis are infertile and women with cystic fibrosis can have children, though it can be riskier if they are underweight.
