Lessen abdominal pain
By addressing Crohn’s and colitis, via talk therapy, many will see their abdominal pain drastically decrease. However, more generally, emotions are directly intertwined with stomach function. Many feel the need to vomit if they are scared, sad, or worried. More generally, a feeling of nausea can be present when emotions are not regulated. In 1915, psychologist Walter Cannon observed that when animals are frightened, their stomach functions change. Humans are alike in this manner, and can often experience diarrhea or stomach pain due to stress.
Approximately 48% of patients who engaged in talk therapy who regularly experience abdominal pain due to IBD noted a significant improvement in their symptoms.
