President George H.W. Bush’s youngest son was a celebrity spokesman for the National Foundation of Ileitis and Colitis in 1990. Having been diagnosed with UC in 1985 at age 28 he decided to speak about his diagnosis to raise awareness. He said that he had tried medications, but ultimately ignored his UC, until he ended up losing 30 pounds and suffering from internal bleeding. This led to him having his colon removed.
