14. Big tobacco companies only just started telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth
You know the depressing commercials that come on occasionally about people whose lives were ruined by smoking? Well, that type of content was not always produced, or required at all. Many of us live in an age where we have known smoking to be bad our entire lives, but previous generations did not, and their advertisements added to that. They would show people happy to be smoking, and enjoying their cigarettes, just like you would advertise anything else.
However, federal courts have ordered some of the largest tobacco companies to create ads that tell the truth: that smoking kills 1,200 people every day, that tobacco companies are in the business of making them as addictive as possible, and that "safer" cigarettes simply do not exist. Cliff Douglas of the American Cancer Society explained, "this is the first time they have had to 'fess up and tell the whole truth. Employing the highest paid lawyers in America, the tobacco companies used every tool at their disposal to delay and complicate the litigation to avoid their day of reckoning."
