20 Biggest Health Scandals in Recent History

17. The USA Gymnastics agreed to dozens of charges amid sex abuse scandal

Over the last 20 years, over 368 female athletes have been sexually assaulted by various people in the gymnastics industry, namely "gym owners, coaches, and staff working for gymnastics across the country." Most of these assaults involved minors.

The scandal became front page news when some of the United States' leading gymnasts came together to accuse Larry Nassar, who was the USA Gymnastics national team doctor, as well as an osteopathic physician at Michigan State University. He would sexually abuse the gymnasts while claiming to be providing routine medical treatment. Sadly, many of the victims were only children when it occurred, and they were unaware of what would be a routine medical treatment compared to sexual assault. Nassar has been sentenced with up to 175 years in prison.

However, Larry Nassar is not the only problem. There is said to be a culture of enabling the abuse throughout the sport, and with the assistance of the victims, USA Gymnastics is fighting to implement changes.
