19. The Zika virus epidemic sparks fear globally
Everyone went a little bit crazy when word of Zika spread, but how could they not? It came just as the Olympics were happening in Rio de Janeiro, and the virus was transmitted by mosquitos! To make matters worse, it became linked to microcephaly - when newborns were born with unusually small heads. As a result, those who were pregnant or planning to become pregnant were advised to stay away from any area that had documented cases of the virus, leading many families to cancel tropical trips - and thousands to cancel their attendance at the Olympics.
Zika is no longer a global emergency, and a treatment is currently being developed; however, it is still a good idea to protect yourself from mosquitoes in areas that are known to have had the virus, especially if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. However, now people don't have to cancel any more vacations!
