"I can be changed by what happens to me but I refuse to be reduced by it." -Maya Angelou
Maya Angelou is one of America’s most recognizable authors, poets, and activists in history. Her most famous autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969), is still widely taught to students as it explores themes of sexual abuse, race, violence, and truth. She also was a freelance writer and an editor for the African Review when she moved to Cairo with her son, and Ghana later on.
Angelou also played an important role in the Civil Rights Movement and had the opportunity to work with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
