22 Hipster Health Trends That Need to Just Stop

Butter in coffee

Forget cream and sugar; nowadays, butter is the go-to add-in for coffee drinkers. Also known as “bulletproof coffee,” this latest trend features mixing one to two tablespoons of unsalted butter to black coffee. In recent years, both coffee and butter have been downgraded from vicious health threats to beneficial dietary features, when consumed in proper portions. However, drinking one or two tablespoons of butter introduces an excessive amount of saturated fat and calories into your diet. A regular cup of plain, black coffee contains about five calories, but drop in the extra servings of butter and you end up with a 100-200 calorie drink. There is also some evidence that too much saturated fat can raise your LDL (bad) cholesterol.

Butter coffee is fine as an occasional drink, but some people have gone so far as to substitute it for an entire meal. High in calories and fat and lacking in nutrients, this beverage fad needs to go away before it completely takes all the fun out of both caffeine and butter.
