Overnight oats and grain bowls
There have been Buddha bowls and smoothie bowls, but now, the “in” dish is grain bowls. The basic composition of a grain bowl includes, as the name implies, a grain base (such as rice, quinoa, or barely), topped with vegetables, a protein, and a dressing of your choice. A sort-of combination salad and stir fry all in one, the appeal of grain bowls is their versatility with ingredients and their nutrient-packed content. However, not all recipes are created equal; certain grain bowl combinations may not be as healthy as advertised.
Without knowing it, many people are creating grain bowls that have a high caloric cost. For example, a meal that combines two cups of rice, a serving of chicken, and half of an avocado racks up over 700 calories! Often times, the size of the bowl tricks people into loading up on ingredients, and thus calories, in order to fill it. When putting together any meal, portion control is an important consideration.
