Adolescent Lymphoma Survivors More Likely to Experience Subsequent Cancers

The role of gender and chemotherapy

Women were twice as likely to develop a nonsolid SMN compared with their male counterparts, though it was not mentioned whether this corresponded with a larger incidence of overall SMNs. Exposure to radiation was also associated with an increased risk of developing a solid SMN, nearly double that compared with cancer survivors who were not exposed to radiation.

The researchers also looked to see if different types of chemotherapy had an effect on whether the cancer survivor developed an SMN. No links were discovered; however, this part of the study was more limited. They only looked at patients who received their treatment between 2000 and 2014, so there was a much smaller follow up time.
