Muscular dystrophy is a genetic disorder that gradually weakens the muscles which supposedly helps the body move; instead, MD deteriorates the person’s mobile ability. Recognized as an inherited genetic condition, those diagnosed with MD have abnormal genes that interfere with the production of proteins that are important to develop a healthy muscle. MD is present in several forms, and there are more cases of boys being diagnosed with MD than girls.
Muscular dystrophy affects roughly 20,000 children each year. MD progressively weakens muscles, so those who are affected by it– babies, children, teenagers, and adults– may gradually lose their ability to do the things that normal people do like walking, talking, swallowing, and sitting.
