Types of Muscular Dystrophy

  • Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) – It is the most common form of MD and affects boys. It is caused by the lack of production of a protein called dystrophin. Without dystrophin, the muscles break down and weaken them. Symptoms usually show between the ages 2 and 6, and it affects the heart and scoliosis may be developed.
  • Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD) – It is similar to DMD that affects boys, only that its symptoms show late and is less severe. People diagnosed with BMD also has breathing, heart, bone, muscle, and joint problems. BMD usually starts at the age of 10 or even until adulthood.
  • Limb-girdle muscular dystrophy (LGMD) – This disease equally victimize both boys and girls, people affected with LGMD starts showing sign as early as childhood or even as late as mid-adulthood. Symptoms include weak muscles in the upper arms, shoulders, around the hips, as well as thighs.
